Christmas day in Australia is a hot day
where people either go down to the beach or stay at home and drink a lot of alcohol. The
usual tradition is to wake up and open the presents, then the people may play cricket or
go swimming. For Christmas lunch people usually have pork or ham, with salad; many don't
usually have hot meals. After they sit around and chat to the relations because Christmas
is also a big family reunion while the ;kids go out and play a game and the adults play
too. We usually have an early tea which is a big meal either turkey, chicken or ham and
vegies, salads or dessert. It is a tradition to have plum pudding and in the pudding is a
sixpence or nowadays a 5 cent piece. The table is decorated with tinsel and ornaments. The
house is also decorated, usually the living room where the Christmas tree is (pine tree),
which is decorated with tinsel and hanging over the fire place are the Christmas cards and
of course the Christmas stockings. On the table next to the fire place is a plate of
biscuits and a glass of milk for Santa when he brings the presents down the chimney. Out
in the bush where people can't get pines they just use a stick or another plant and some
people spray paint a branch and make decorations or just decorate a plant. Some people
even make their own paper to wrap the gifts. In Australia Christmas day is a time for
giving, sharing, peace, loving and fun. Families come together, make peace and share their
love for each other.
